Tonga Kingdom paper money, 2 Paʻanga from the Kingdom of Tonga, highlighting its cultural and artistic value:
This banknote is part of the latest series launched by the Central Bank of Tonga in 2023, representing a unique blend of modernity and ancient Polynesian traditions. The banknote is dominated by a warm coral red color and has geometric dimensions of 150 x 70 mm. It is printed on high-quality paper containing cotton fibers to enhance its texture and durability.
On the front of the currency, a formal portrait of King Tupou VI, King of the Kingdom of Tonga, is prominently displayed, appearing in his military uniform adorned with medals, giving an impression of prestige and national sovereignty. Alongside his portrait, we find the royal "coat of arms," which consists of a divided shield symbolizing the crown, the church, and the three main islands, topped with an olive branch as a symbol of peace. The background is adorned with intricate patterns inspired by "Tapa" art, a traditional handmade cloth made from tree bark, considered one of the most important cultural symbols in the Pacific region.
The back of the banknote celebrates the kingdom's enchanting nature, depicting a majestic scene of a humpback whale leaping above the water's surface. This choice is highly symbolic, as Tonga is globally known as a natural sanctuary for these whales that migrate to its warm waters for breeding, making it a symbol of the country's environment and tourism.
In terms of security and technology, the banknote is equipped with an advanced watermark that clearly shows the King's image when exposed to light, in addition to a security thread that changes color when the note is tilted. A small square hologram in the upper left corner can also be observed, which helps verify the authenticity of the currency and is difficult to counterfeit.
