Summary of Al-Baghawi's Interpretation Known as Ma'alim al-Tanzil
-
Overview:
It is considered one of the most esteemed and noble books, containing the authentic sayings, devoid of ambiguity and artifice in clarifying the Qur'anic text, embellished with prophetic hadiths and narratives, the majority of which are authentic.
Ma'alim al-Tanzil is one of the most famous books of Tafsir based on narration. It is a complete interpretation of the Qur'an with:
An introduction by the author that begins with praise for Allah and blessings and peace upon His Messenger ﷺ. It then explains the purpose of sending the Messenger and revealing the miraculous Book to him, followed by mentioning what the Qur'an encompasses in terms of beliefs, jurisprudence, stories, and wisdom.
Then, Al-Baghawi moves to the reasons for composing his Tafsir, stating: "A group of my sincere companions, who are eager for knowledge, asked me for a book on Ma'alim al-Tanzil and its interpretation, so I responded to them relying on the grace of Allah and His facilitation, embodying the advice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in what is narrated by Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that he ﷺ said: 'There will come to you men from the distant lands who seek to understand the religion, so when they come to you, treat them well.'"
From this text, we learn that his interpretation was a response to the desire of his devoted students and disciples who are eager to acquire knowledge, fulfilling the advice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and following in the footsteps of those before.
Al-Baghawi then presents the method he has chosen for his interpretation, which is one of moderation and balance, stating: "With the help of Allah and His graceful facilitation, I have compiled, as they requested, a book that is moderate between the lengthy and tedious and the brief and insufficient, which I hope will be beneficial to those who seek to obtain it."
