Key Responsibilities:
* Grafting Operations:
* Perform various grafting techniques (e.g., budding, cleft grafting, whip-and-tongue) on citrus trees and seedlings.
* Carefully select and prepare scion wood (budwood) and rootstock for grafting, ensuring proper alignment of cambium layers for successful union.
* Inoculate receptor trees with specific budwood to test for viral diseases, such as Citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV).
* Propagate desirable citrus scions onto appropriate rootstock to create new trees with improved characteristics (e.g., disease resistance, dwarfing, fruit quality).
* Monitor grafted plants regularly (e.g., every two weeks) to check for successful establishment of the graft union.
* Plant Care and Maintenance:
* Hand water and fertilize citrus trees and seedlings in the nursery or greenhouse.
* Assist with transplanting citrus seedlings and other plants as needed.
* Maintain a clean and organized greenhouse and work area, including washing pots and sanitizing equipment.
* Scout for insect pests and report findings to supervisors.
* Occasionally assist with spraying micronutrients or non-restricted use pesticides under supervision.
* Quality Control and Record Keeping:
* Maintain accurate plant identification throughout the grafting and testing process.
* Label plants with block number, plant number, and date.
* Compare incoming plants with paperwork to ensure correct identity.
* Prepare and process plant samples for testing (e.g., cutting tissue, grinding samples, transferring extracts).
* Maintain detailed records of grafting procedures, success rates, plant health, and any issues encountered.
* Assist in identifying diseased greenhouse plants.
* General Nursery/Laboratory Support:
* Operate and maintain basic agricultural and laboratory equipment (e.g., soil sterilizer, pipettes, grinders).
* Prepare soil mixes for potting plants.
* Sanitize equipment and workstations before and after use.
* Wash and dry equipment appropriately.
* Prepare sample bags with labels for field collection.
* Unload sample deliveries to the lab or refrigeration.
* Perform other job-related duties as requested by the supervisor.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
* Technical Skills:
* Proven experience and proficiency in various plant grafting techniques, specifically with citrus.
* Basic knowledge of plant physiology, horticulture, and plant propagation.
* Familiarity with plant diseases and pest identification.
* Ability to follow detailed protocols and procedures precisely.
* Experience with general greenhouse operations and plant care.
* Physical Demands:
* Ability to perform repetitive motions.
* Capable of lifting and carrying items weighing up to 25-50 lbs (e.g., bags of soil, fertilizer).
* Ability to stand for extended periods.
* Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination.
